17.12.09 ISAF Classification Code geändert
Die ISAF hat den viel diskutierten Classification Code überarbeitet um die Dauerdiskussionen "wer ist Amateur und wer ist Profi" etwas transparenter zu machen.

05.12.2009: Nikolaus Cup, Sonwik
Bericht vom Zweitplatzierten, Jan Schmidt (GER 266):
Sieben furchtlose Melgescrews fanden ihren Weg nach Flensburg um den Nikolator zu küren.
Der erste Start war auf 1200 gelegt, welcher dann nochmals auf 1330 aufgrund von fehlender Tonen und Startschiff gelegt wurde. Aber beides war dann schnell gefunden und das zeigt mal wieder den unkomplizierten Umgang in der Melges24 Klasse.
Segelanweisung gab es nicht. Das führte im ersten Rennen zwar zu Verwirrung da die Hälfte des Feldes die Leetonne als Leetonne sahen, und nicht als Gate ( Startschiff / Tonne). Da die Tonne eh bevorteilt lag, haben wir dezent drüber hinweggesehen. Die Starts an der kurzen Linie gingen ohne "großes" Geschrei über die Bühne und selbst die Steuerbordstarts von "Pflaumenkomplott" führten weder zu Gelcoatschäden ( Schade ! d. Bootsbauer) oder Proteste. Gut gemacht Sven.
Die Bahn lag direkt vor Sonwik, so das die Spazierenden einen tollen Blick auf das Getümmel hatten. Ein Rennen dauerte ca. 20 min. up-down-up-down. Die ersten beiden Rennen liefen für uns ( Bostik Bad Boys) sehr gut, da wir sie beide mit Abstand gewinnen konnten. Bei den kurzen Kursen war der Start entscheidend, aber unser Speed war auch sehr gut. Das dritte Rennen fing dann leider auch mit einem schlechtem Start an. Wir konnten zwar wieder ins Feld vorstoßen, aber am Ende verloren wir vor lauter Gegner die Ziellinie aus den Augen , wir mussten dann ziemlich hochziehen und es wurde nur ein 6. Dafür war es dann auch der Zieldurchgang des Tages. 1-7 in ca 12 Sek.! Rennen 4 und 5 waren dann so Mittelfeld, aber wir erreichten die 10 knoten Marke ! und das letzte Rennen dann ein Kopf an Kopf Rennen mit "Imagine" welches wir nach dem zweiten Upwind für uns entscheiden konnten. Nach dem 6. Rennen wurde dann vom Startboot zum Hafen geblasen, Respekt an Jönne und seinem Fahnenmann; die stillsitzend der Kälte trotzen mussten. Wir konnten uns ja warm segeln. (Vielleicht wäre ja im nächsten Jahr ein Boot MIT Kajüte angebracht)
Es ging also in den Hafen und die Schiffe wurden in einsetzenden Regen wieder abgeriggt und rausgekrant, danach konnten wir uns dann die Tauchergruppe anschauen die mit Fackeln über die Förde schwammen. Noch ein wenig Feuerwerk und ab ging es in das Museumschiff "Gesine" mit dem Bollerofen. Dort gab es dann Erbsensuppe und durch die Anwesenheit von "gefühlten" 300 Leuten einen leichten Sauerstoffmangel. Also richtig gemütlich.
Die Preisverleihung war legendär, die Punkte wurden währenddessen zusammengerechnet und Lars kennt jetzt auch seine Segelnummer und Sven zeigt das ein konstantes Segeln sich auszahlt Danach ging es für einige noch in die Stadt zum Essen.
Die nächste Regatta steht schon auf dem Programm, Heiligabend oder erster Weihnachtstag gehts nochmal nach Glücksburg.. Der Wintervirus hat um sich gegriffen -und hier ein kleiner Eindruck von den Wetterbedingungen:

05.12. Nikolaussegeln, Sonwik

Hallo,
damit der Winter nicht zu lang wird, findet am 05.12 das Nicolaussegeln in Sonwik statt.
An den Start gehen 8 Melges und eingige VB Jollen.
Wir werden 5-6 kurze up and down Wettfahrten, zwischen Sonwik und der Werft, starten. Man kann von der Mohle beim Odere del Mare super zuschauen.
Wenn es dunkel wird, schwimmen die Taucher mit Fackeln und Tannenbaum in den Hafen von Sonwik.
Anschließend gibt es Punsch, Bratwurst und Erbsensuppe auf der Gesine.
Wer sich das ansehen möchte, wir legen um 11:00 los.

Melges24 WM 2009 - Das Finale

Geschafft!! - die US-Flotte feiert den Sieg bei der Melges24 WM 2009!!
Für Samstag, 31.10. waren noch 3 Rennen zu segeln um die 12er Serie komplett zu machen - allerdings passten Wetterbericht und Istzustand nicht ganz zusammen. Es waren für den Morgen bereits 10-15 Knoten Wind angekündigt - eingetroffen ist das dann allerdings nicht, sondern man hatte wieder mit leichten drehenden Winden zu kämpfen die eine Startverschiebung erforderten.
Dann aber doch der angekündigte Wind und die Zeit reichte noch für 2 blitzsaubere Rennen bei bis zu 18 Knoten Windgeschwindigkeit.
Theoretisch hatten noch 4 Teams Titelchangen (Larson, Zandona, Melleby, Celon) und entsprechend nervös ging es zur Sache.
Der 10 Lauf konnte dann nur unter Z-Regel gestartet werden, das wurde mehreren Top-Teams zum Verhängnis: Joe Fly (Zandona), Uka Uka (Bressani) und Quantum Racing (Terry Hutchinson) waren die "Glücklichen" und somit schon vor den letzten beiden Läufen "aus dem Geschäft um den Titel".
Chris Larson und seine Crew lässt nichts anbrennen und segelt ein weiteres Topresultat - 2ter knapp hinter det ITA 804 „Gullisara“.
SOMIT NACH 10 LÄUFEN UNEINHOLBAR IN FÜHRUNG UND WELTMEISTER 2010 IN DER MELGES24 KLASSE!! Zum 11. Rennen brauchte die Crew um Chris Larson nicht mehr antreten. Die "Locals" hatten es geschafft. Eine beeindruckende Laufserie mit 4 2ten Plätzen und nie schlechter wie 12ter bringen den US-Boys einen Vorsprung von 25 Punkten auf die Verfolger. Rekordverdächtig!!
Spannend machten es dann die Verfolger beim Kampf um Platz 2 und 3 – die theoretischen Plätze „auf dem Stockerl“ wechselten im 11. Rennen mehrmals.
Der Laufsieg im 11. Rennen geht an die immer stärker werdenden Celon-Crew auf ITA 765 „Fantastica“ vor den starken Norwegeren auf NOR 804 gesteuert von Eivind Melleby.
Somit ist direkt anch Zieleinlauf klar, dass die Norweger Silber oder Bronze holen. Der Fantastica bleibt nun nicht anderes übrig als zu hoffen, dass die vor Ihnen liegende Joe Fly schlechter wie 9ter abschneidet – und lange sieht es so aus.
Der letzte Downwind bringt die Entscheidung und die Joe Fly macht wichtige Plätze gut und wird 6ter – und somit Vizeweltmeister allerdings punktgleich mit Eivind Mellebys „Full Metal Jacket“.
Das war‘s – eine spannende, in weiten Strecken von Schwachwind dominierte WM geht zu Ende.
Von den Seglern unserer KV gibt es zu berichten:
Christoph Wieland und Carlo Vroon schlagen sich wacker im vorderen Mittelfeld und belegen schlussendlich die Plätze 23. und 25. – schade, dass die „Unsponsered“ Ihre Chancen auf den Corinthian Titel nicht nutzen konnte - bis zum 8 Rennen lag man auf Platz 3 und nur knapp hinter den Führenden – und wird zum Schluss 5ter.
Der Titel der Corinthians bleibt ebenfalls in den USA und geht an Bruce Ayres auf USA 747 „Monsoon“ punktgleich vor der USA 679 „Gannet“.

Larson Holds His Nerve To Take The Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis 2009 Melges
The fifty-one international teams, who had travelled from across North America and Europe to compete in the Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis 2009 Melges 24 World Championships, finally got the welcome opportunity to race in double-digit breezes on the final day of the regatta. Despite the Championship racecourse being shrouded in appropriately Halloween style mist for most of the day, the Race Committee successfully banged off two four-leg races in winds which peaked at around fourteen knots.
Chris Larson at the helm of 'West Marine Rigging/New England Ropes', who had led the regatta on-and-off for much of the week, took a seventeen point lead into the final day and looked odds-on to take the title. However with the potential for three races to be sailed today, Larson was always potentially vulnerable to attack from second placed Gabrio Zandona at the helm of the Italian entry 'Joe Fly'.
If Larson was in fact feeling the pressure of leading the championship into the final day, there was no visible evidence at the start of the first race. With several of the top teams including Zandona, Lorenzo Bressani on 'Uka Uka Racing' and Terry Hutchinson on 'Quantum Racing/Gill Race Team' being called OCS soon after the start, Larson was able to pick his way skilfully through the melee at the pin and followed eventual race winner Nico Celon on 'Fantastica' off the line. Rounding the top mark with only Carlo Fracassoli on 'Gullisara' in front of him, Larson sailed a calm and composed race and went on to record his fourth second place of the week. Zandona, Bressani and Hutchinson all received twenty percent Z-flag penalties and following an announcement from the Race Officer that there would be no third race, Larson now found himself in an unassailable position. With no reason to compete in the second race of the day, he and his delighted crew: Mike Wolfs, Curtis Florence and tactician Richard Clarke, headed ashore to start to begin to celebrate their Melges 24 World Championship victory.
The focus was now on the four-way scrap for the remaining podium places between Zandona on sixty-five points, Norway's Eivind Melleby on 'Full Medal Jacket' on sixty-nine points, Celon on seventy-two points and Bressani on seventy-four points. Arguably the windiest of the Championship, the final race was a real humdinger with the top ten boats packed closely together at all the mark roundings. Jamie Lea on the British entry 'Team Barbarians' squeezed in for a near perfect start at the pin and led the early part of the beat. However it was Celon who led around the top mark, with Bill Hardesty on 'Events Clothing/Atlantis' in second and Lea in third. Hutchinson and Melleby rounded in fourth and fifth and as the leaders, all in close formation, ripped down wind for the first time, it was impossible to predict who would reach the gate first. In fact Celon managed to hold his lead, but only just from the charging Melleby who had blitzed into second place. The fierce battle for the lead between these two lasted until the finish, with Celon eventually prevailing and securing fourth overall. Meanwhile after rounding the first mark outside the top ten, Zandona was making steady progress up through the fleet. By the finish he was up to sixth, which tied him on points with Melleby. With the count back applied Zandona claimed second overall, with Melleby clearly delighted to have achieved the first ever Norwegian podium finish at a Melges 24 World Championship.
Without doubt Chris Larson is a popular and worthy winner of this Championship. Significantly, the only one of the top three whose scoreline did not include a race win, his amazing consistency in the capricious Annapolis conditions was simply too much for the opposition. Soaking in his victory tonight Larson said he was delighted to have won and relieved to have got through the final day on top. 'As it turned out the OCS scenario on the first race really meant the battle was over before it began. We were pretty surprised just after the start when we saw Hutchinson, Zandona and Bressani all going back. That pretty much handed control to us and there was the regatta over.'
The battle for the 2009 Corinthian Melges 24 World Title proved to be equally and today brought a final showdown between California's Bruce Ayres sailing Monsoon and Annapolis local hero Othmar Mueller Von Blumencron sailing Gannet. The battle for third place was also extremely close with just seven points ultimately separating third to seventh place.
Going into the day Ayres had a narrow four-point lead over Blumencron who was ten points ahead of Charleston's David Dabney in Conejo Racing-Ocean Sailing Academy and Germany's Christof Wieland aboard Unsponsored, both on 35 points. Also tied on 39 points were Henry Filter, from Annapolis sailing Wild Child, and August Hernandez of Chicago aboard High Voltage whilst seventh placed Zetzema Wietze helming Gelikt for Carlo Vroon of the Netherlands, trailed them by just a further two points.
Wieland's chance of the final podium position evaporated on the start line of the penultimate race when he fell foul of the Z Flag and had to take a 20% penalty dropping him from 9th to 12th, his worst result of the series. Von Blumencron made no such mistakes and led the Corinthian division from the off to take a confident win (and a ninth in the overall race) with Hernandez second, Dabney third, Witze fourth and the Ukrain's Vasily Gureyev sailing Null fifth. Ayres crossed the line in sixth putting Von Blumencron into the overall lead by a single point going into the final race. Dabney and Wieland were now tied for third with Hernandez fifth, Weitze sixth and Filter seventh.
For Ayres, one of the veterans of the Melges 24 class and a former North American Corinthian Champion, the Corinthian World title has long been unfinished business. From the off it was clear he had no intention of letting the championship get away from his grasp this time around. At the first weather mark he was lead Corinthian and managed to slide nicely over the top of a gaggle of open division boats whilst Von Blumencron, coming in on the port layline, was forced to dip and look for a slot rounding well into the teens. Having gained separation Ayres confidently stretched away and whilst Von Blumencron did manage to pick off several of the open division boats between them he was never in a position to challenge for the lead. Meanwhile the battle for third place was still raging. On the water it was Filter who took the third in race eleven, but right behind him was Hernandez with Wieland fifth, Weitze sixth, Gureyev seventh, local boy Jim Golden eighth and a disappointed Dabney ninth.
Having finished first and second respectively Ayres and Von Blumencron were tied on 28 points with Ayres finally getting his hands on the much-coveted Henri Samuel Corinthian World Championship Trophy on count back. Herenandez's fourth place was sufficient to give him the final podium position whilst a disappointed Dabney had to be content with fourth overall.
Speaking after racing a delighted Bruce Ayres was full of praise for his crew of Don Smith, Dave Navin and tactician Jon Pinckney. "I'd like to particularly thank Don Smith and John Pinckney for hanging with me for ten years and of course Dave Navin. We don't sail a lot but when we get to these regattas our goal is to hang in there with the best and we're delighted to have achieved that goal."

Der Mond ist aufgegangen: ...und zwar der "Blu Moon"... - Crew des Tages war eindeuting die für die Schweiz startende "Blu Moon" von Franco Rossini, die am Freitag beide Läufe gewinnen konnte.
Es war wiederum sehr schwachwinding - an der Grenze des Segelbaren, hinzu kommt die starke Strömung auf der Chesapeake Bay, die das Segeln dort extrem schwierig macht.
In der Gesamtwertung festigt allerding Chris Larson seine Führung, der erneut 2 Topresultate gesegelt ist.
Im Amateurranking festigt der Führende seine Position ebenfalls - "unser Christoph" (Wieland) hat am Freitag keinen ganz so tollen Tag erwischt und ist in dieser Wertung auf den 4. Platz abgerutscht - allerdings punktgleich mit dem 3., aber schon 10 Punkte hinter dem Zweiten - ein Platz "auf dem Stockerl" ist also noch drin!

Two Bullets For Favini But Larson Tightens Grip On
The Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis Melges 24 World Championship
Annapolis, MD, USA - 30 October 2009 - After yet another light and fickle day on the water, the fifty-one boat international fleet competing at the Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis 2009 Melges 24 World Championship, now appear resigned to racing in sub seven knot breezes. With day five of the regatta seeing maximum pressure of no more than six knots, the Race Committee certainly had to have their wits about them to get two races off as soon as the opportunities presented themselves.
So far this regatta, 2001 Melges 24 World Champion Flavio Favini aboard the Swiss registered 'Blu Moon', had produced an uncharacteristically lacklustre performance, but today Favini spectacularly returned to more familiar form; winning both of the day's races in some style. Whilst still handicapped by a trio of double-digit scores earlier in the week, today's sparkling performance leapfrogs the 'Blu Moon' crew from up eleventh to seventh overall tonight.
Going into day five, overnight leader Chris Larson on 'West Marine Rigging/New England Ropes', held a tenuous six-point lead over Norway's Eivind Melleby on 'Full Metal Jacket'. Topping the leaderboard at a major regatta such as this one produces its own special kind of mental pressure, but the experienced Larson certainly showed no signs of stage fright in the first race of the day, turning in a confident performance to take second place behind Favini and extending his winning margin at that stage to sixteen points. With second placed Melleby faltering with a sixteenth, an eighth for Gabrio Zandona on 'Joe Fly' was good enough to move the Italian team back up to second overall but only with a four point margin over Melleby.
In the second race of the day Andrew Wills on 'Cracker Racing' held on to his first mark lead until the end of the second beat when he finally succumbed to sustained pressure from both Favini and Lorenzo Bressani on 'Uka Uka Racing'. On the final run Favini comfortably saw off Bressani's advances and ghosted across the finish line to take his second victory of the day by a margin of several boat lengths. After a difficult start to the regatta reigning World Champion Bressani now sits in third overall and mathematically at least still within striking distance of retaining the title he won last year in Porto Cervo.
Zandona and Larson finished in quick succession in seventh and eighth place respectively in the final race, so the American skipper takes a fifteen-point advantage over his Italian rival into the last day of the Championship. Terry Hutchinson's solid 5,3, scores today move him up to fourth overall, with a seven point gap back to 2006 Melges 24 World Champion Nico Celon in fifth.
The overall order in the Corinthian Division looks a little more established at the end of day five, with 'Monsoon' helm Bruce Ayres's pair of Corinthian bullets giving him a four point delta over Othmar Mueller von Blumencron on 'Gannet'. A four and a three for David Dabney on 'Conejo Racing - Ocean Sailing Academy' leaves him tied on points with Germany's Christof Wieland on 'Unsponsored'. Dabney is in third place by virtue of the count back with Wieland in fourth overall, four points ahead of Henry Filter on 'Wild Child'.
The fervent collective hope amongst everyone here in Annapolis is that tomorrow's much-heralded forecast of winds in the mid-teens comes to fruition for the final day of racing. With the Race Committee keen to try to complete their series by getting three races in before the 14.30 cut-off, the prospect of the World Title being decided in the last race of the regatta is a tantalisingly real one.

Alles ist relativ... Der Leichtwind von Mittwoch wurde heute nochmal getoppt, leider in die negative Richtung - somit noch mal ein Rennen bei Superleichtwind (langsam gehen mir die Bezeichnungen aus).
Aber die Profis tragen es mit Fassung und geben Ihr Bestes - man muss es halt nehmen wie es kommt.
Viele Boote wurden per Funk als OCS genannt aber nicht alle haben das mitbekommen, so dass die heutige Ergebnisliste erstmals mehrere Boote mit Buchstaben zeigen wird.
Die beiden Spitzenboote haben es heute nicht ganz im Griff und landen auf den Plätzen 12 (USA 655) und 17 (ITA 777) - Chris Larson kann den 12er streichen, Joe Fly nimmt den 17er mit, da bereits ein 18. Platz zum Streichen ansteht.
Das war es dann für Donnerstag - nach dem 7. Rennen meldet sich der Wind komplett ab und die Flotte kann zurück zum City Dock und freut sich auf einen Cocktail.
Somit formiert sich das Spitzentrio neu und zwar wie folgt:
1. USA 655, Chris Larson - 22 Punkte
2. NOR 804, Eivind Melleby - 28 Punkte
3. ITA 777, Gabrio Zandona - 32 Punkte
Die Punktabstände wachsen....ganz im Gegensatz zu den Amateuren, dort rücken sich die Top 3 immer näher auf die Pelle.
"Unser" Christoph Wieland kann es von den Top 3 heute am Besten und belegt einen 3ten Platz währende die beiden vor Ihm liegenden nur auf dem 13. bzw. 5. Platz landen, somit sieht der Zwischenstand wie folgt aus:
1. USA 747, Bruce Ayres - 19 Punkte
2. USA 679, Othmar v. Blumencron - 21 Punkte
3. GER 635, Christoph Wieland - 21 Punkte

Larson Makes Sense Of Drifting Conditions To Regain The Lead At The Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis Melges 24 World Championship
When the fleet left for the racecourse on day four of the Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis 2009 Melges 24 World Championship, collective hopes of any racing were pretty low. The promising early morning breeze out on the Chesapeake frustratingly evaporated almost immediately the fleet reached the race area. Consequentially a long wait ensued while the Race Committee tried to track down some more. The delay lasted until just before midday, when Principal Race Officer Jeff Borland decided to try to get the fleet racing around a four-leg racetrack, in breezes which averaged no more than five knots.
The lack of breeze at the start resulted in a somewhat chaotic scene as the barely moving boats struggled to build enough speed to get away from the line, as well as almost twenty boats being called over at the gun. Down at the favoured pin end, a battle of wills between Chris Larson on 'West Marine Rigging/New England Ropes', Terry Hutchinson on 'Quantum Racing' and Argyle Campbell on 'Rock n Roll resulted in all three boats losing out. After appearing to get away to near perfect starts Hutchinson and Campbell were called OCS and had to make an agonising return to restart. Larson meanwhile had stayed safe but had been forced to tack on to port to avoid the pin boat, resulting in a huge slow bear away behind a pack of starboard tackers. A few boat lengths up the line Norway's Eivind Melleby had made a clean start with good speed and as the OCS boats peeled off in front of him he suddenly had a clean lane in which to lead the fleet out to the left hand side of the beat.
As the fleet made their way slowly up the first leg, the left phase breeze initially helped those on the left to secure their position as the leading pack. However a twenty-degree right shift at the top of the leg caught out those who had gone furthest left; including early leader Melleby, who had to settle for rounding the windward mark just inside the top ten. It was Lorenzo Bressani helming 'Uka Uka Racing' who made the most sense of the variable conditions to round the top mark already well ahead of the pack. Second around was local Corinthian helmsman Henry Filter on 'Wild Child', just ahead of Alan Field on 'WTF' and Neily Williamson on 'Millewa Milluna'. Second placed overall Larson had made a good recovery from his difficult start to round in tenth place whilst at this stage Championship leader Gabrio Zandona on 'Joe Fly' was still struggling up the beat in a high twenties position.
As the race progressed, the breeze if anything got a touch lighter. Bressani turned his lead at the front of the fleet into a virtual horizon job, while Filter made the most of his local experience to make his second place secure at the finish. Field also refused to relinquish his third place and ghosted home ahead of Tony Beale on 'Scotch Bonnet' in fourth and Nico Celon on 'Fantastica' in fifth. Melleby meanwhile had managed to pick off a few boats and chalked up a satisfying sixth place which moved him up to second place overall tonight. With Zandona only managing to claw his way back to seventeenth, Larson's eventual twelfth was good enough for him to regain the overall lead. With two more days of scheduled racing to go Zandona now sits in third place, just four points behind Melleby, who in turn is further six points off Larson. Bressani's win takes him up to fifth overall.
Henry Filter's win in the Corinthian Division saw him close the gap on the top three helms and he lies in fourth tonight. Despite only managing a Corinthian seventh today Bruce Ayres on 'Monsoon'continues to hold the overall lead, but only on count back from Othmar von Blumencron on 'Gannet' in second. With this pair tied on nineteen points, third placed Christof Wieland on 'Unsponsored' is poised just two points behind to capitalise on any slip-ups from the top two.
Tomorrow's forecast is rumoured to call for similar weather to today, however there is some hope on the horizon for the racers, in the form of a local prediction of big breeze on Saturday's final day of racing. Certainly, given the frustrating conditions they have experienced so far, the fifty-one international teams competing at this Championship would surely welcome an opportunity for some real Melges 24 high-speed adrenaline action.

Wieder Leichtwind vor Annapolis: Am 3. Wettfahrttag konnten wiederum 2 Läufe gesegelt werden - allerdings beginnt der Tag mit Startverschiebung und warten auf dem Wasser.
Dann gelingt es der Wettfahrtleitung 2 Läufe bei leichtem bis sehr leichtem Wind zu segeln - wer das Video des Zieleinlaufs der 5. Wettfahrt ansieht bekommt eine Vorstellung wie wenig Wind es hatte.
Der 6. Lauf geht dann etwas zügiger über die Bühne und eine durchlaufende Wolkenfront auf der 2ten Kreuz bringt Druck von rechts - unser guter Freund Carlo Vroon nutzt den massiven Rechtsdreher und verholt sich aus den "Dreißigeren" in die Top 10.
Christoph Wieland auf "Unsponsored" segelt in diesem Rennen konstant in der Spitze, immer zwischen 5 und 10 und hält seine Top10 Platzierung bis ins Ziel.
SOMIT UNSER TAG!!
Die Unspsonsored liegt nun auf Platz 3 der Corinthian Wertung - RESPEKT.
Im Gesamtresultat gibt es nach dem Streicher ebenfalls eine Veränderung und die "Joe Fly" übernimmt die Führung - die Top 3 liegen jedoch nur 7 Punkte auseinander...es bleibt spannend.

Italy's Gabrio Zandona Edges Chris Larson Into Second Place After A Light Airs Day Three At The Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis Melges 24 World Championship
For the competitors arriving at the City Dock this morning on day three of the Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis 2009 Melges 24 World Championship, the chances of racing taking place seemed unlikely, with Annapolis shrouded in low cloud and no evidence of any wind whatsoever. Despite the gloomy outlook, Principal Race Officer Jeff Borland put all trust in his local knowledge and led the fleet out on to the race area. This forthright strategy was eventually rewarded, when after a prolonged delay, a fitful breeze finally developed and racing got underway. As a further bonus the quickly clearing skies soon bathed the competitors, race management fleet and the many spectator boats in some welcome warm sunshine. With winds peaking at no more than seven knots, by no stretch of the imagination could the racing today be described as high adrenaline, but nevertheless the conditions did produce some fascinating tactical battles at the front of the fleet.
Race one saw the three Championship leaders, Chris Larson on 'West Marine Rigging/New England Ropes', Gabrio Zandona on 'Joe Fly' and Bill Hardesty on 'Events Clothing/Atlantis', round the first windward mark in that order. Hot on their heels was first Corinthian helm Bruce Ayres on 'Monsoon'. Rather than follow leader Larson down the left hand side of the course, 'Joe Fly' tactician Daniele Cassinari opted for an early gybe on to port. As Larson and the rest of the leading pack went almost to the left hand layline, the Italian team on 'Joe Fly' made good progress closer to the middle of the course. When the boats converged at the leeward gate it was neck and neck between the first two; Larson coming in from the left having to handbrake his way round the port gate, whilst Zandona arriving with more pressure and speed from further right was able to make a smoother exit from the right buoy. Zandona immediately captialised on this slight edge and moved smootly into the lead up the second beat. As the leg progressed the breeze became increasingly unstable; dropping as low as four knots at times. Staying in the maximum pressure, Zandona rammed home his upwind advantage and rounded the second windward mark well ahead of Larson, who was now having to deal with a sustained challenge from Ayres. These three boats had pulled out a big gap on the rest of the pack and were well into the run before the fourth boat, Lorenzo Bressani on 'Uka Uka Racing' rounded the weather mark. There were no place changes amongst the top four on the one sided and somewhat processional final leg, with Zandona claiming his second race win of the series ahead of the ever consistent Larson in second, a clearly delighted Ayres in third and a relieved looking Bressani in fourth. Norwegian Eivind Melleby on 'Full Metal Jacket' continued his impressive form in this series, clocking up another top ten result in fifth.
Another delay then ensued whilst the Race Committee and competitors waited around hopefully for the wind to re-establish itself. When a seven to eight knot breeze finally filtered on to the racecourse, it took a general recall and an I-Flag deterrent to get the fleet underway for the five-leg final race of the day. After the wind flicked into left phase just before the start, Kristen Lane on 'Brick House' won a three way battle for the pin with 2006 World Champion Nico Celon at the helm of 'Fantastica' and US National Champion Brian Porter on 'Full Throttle', to lead the fleet away. The boats further back along the line were tightly packed and struggling to accelerate, giving Celon and Lane the opportunity to quickly tack on to port and set off into a little extra pressure. A drop in breeze to around five knots and a port hand shift as the leaders approached the windward mark for the first time, gave added advantage to the boats who had got furthest left. Celon led around the top mark in close proximity with Eivind Melleby on 'Full Metal Jacket' who had made a stunning comeback from what had looked like a poor situation immediately after the start. Kristen Lane went around third, with Rome Kirby on USA 620 fourth and Robby Wilkins on 'Vamoose' in fifth. Championship leader Chris Larson pulled off yet another top ten rounding in sixth place, all the time with a close eye on his series rival Zandona who rounded just outside the top ten. Down the first run Melleby and Celon were engaged in a fierce battle for the lead with the Norwegian eventually prevailing after he sneaked over the top of the Italian in the final boat lengths to the mark.
On the light air second beat new pressure developed quickly on the right. Zetzema Wietze on Dutch entry 'Gelickt' was the first to spot it and in a matter of minutes moved from the mid-teens up into fourth place. Zandona also did well out of the right hand side and slipped into sixth behind Peter Lane. At the top mark Melleby still led from Larson and Celon but with Lane and Zandona now very much back in contention. Down the run and final beat, whilst Melleby always looked calm and composed in first place, a real slugging match had developed between the next five boats for second place. At the finish as Melleby took a comfortable win, Celon edged out Larson into third with the rapidly charging Zandona slotting into fourth.
With the single discard for the twelve race series is now in play, Gabrio Zandona and the 'Joe Fly' crew have moved up to become the new Championship leaders, by just one point from Chris Larson on 'West Marine Rigging/New England Ropes'. Sixth race winner Eivind Melleby on 'Full Metal Jacket' eases into the final podium position at this stage with Bill Hardesty on 'Events Clothing/Atlantis' discarding a final race thirty-eighth to take fourth. Carlo Fracassoli on 'Gullisara' continues to impress and is in fifth place overall.
Today saw no let up in the scrap for the Corinthian Division World Title, with Bruce Ayres now leading by just one point from Othmar Mueller von Blumencron on 'Gannet' in second. A good day for Germany's Christof Wieland on 'Unsponsored' elevates him to third place overall tonight.

The Italian style is back: Kaum hat es Wind zeigen sich die Italiener wieder in der Spitze. Uka Uka legt einen tollen Tag hin, leidet aber noch unter den schlechten Resultaten des Montags.
Sobald der Streicher zum Tragen kommt wird das Gesamtergebnis nochmals kräftig durchgewürfelt werden. Gut für die Crews mit Ausrutscher - Schade für die Crews mit bis dahin konstanten Leistungen.
Die Windverhältnisse waren wohl ganz ordentlich - zum Ende des Tage wieder nachlassend. Außerdem war es nass (von oben).

Good Day For The Italians But Larson Extends His Lead At The Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis Melges 24 World Championship
Despite the decidedly damp and cold conditions which prevailed on day two of the Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis 2009 Melges 24 World Championship, the quality of racing for the international fleet was nonetheless characteristically red hot. Overnight leader Chris Larson aboard 'West Marine Rigging/New England Ropes' turned in a solidly consistent 6,4, scoreline for the day, w.hich sees him extend his margin at the top of the leaderboard tonight to eleven points. Surprisingly perhaps Larson believed that the Annapolis conditions today had been more predictable than normal. 'The wind didn't really move about that much today, so much so in fact that in both races we were actually able to one-tack both first beats by simply hitting the left hand layline. This afternoon though the wind did begin to get a little spotty, with more pressure in some places than others.' Whilst obviously delighted to still be leading at this stage, Larson also recognised that there was still a long way to go in this Championship. 'We are four races in to a twelve race series and so far I've been successful with doing my job on the boat, which is to get us off the line cleanly. Richard Clarke has been doing a great job on tactics and the whole crew has been solid. I think if we can maintain this approach then we will be in good shape.'
Today also saw a return to more familiar form for two of the Melges 24 fleet's most well known teams, as Italians Lorenzo Bressani on 'Uka Uka Racing' and Gabrio Zandona on 'Joe Fly' respectively, each took a gun in today's two races. Bressani followed up his win in the first race with a second place in race two, after a prolonged battle with Zandona at the front of the fleet. 'Uka Uka Racing's' 1, 2 score today earned them boat of the day; an achievement made all the more impressive given that they were racing with a substitute crew, following a severe ankle injury to their regular bow-girl Francesca Prina. For the first time this regatta, they have broken into the top ten and now sit in seventh place overall. Trimmer Federico Michetti was full of praise for stand-in Meredith Adams, who he said had coped well with sailing with a foreign speaking team. 'To be honest I was very nervous about how things would go today as we have raced and trained for so long with Francesca. Meredith fitted in really well however and picked up our way of doing things very quickly.' Asked if he thought 'Uka Uka Racing' could still win this championship, Michetti glanced down at the results sheet and commented 'For sure we could. There are lots of teams in the top ten with poor scores. We definitely have no more room for mistakes and it will be very, very difficult. However, we like a good fight and of course will be trying to the very end.' Michetti has his own special incentive to keep striving for victory; already a triple Melges 24 European Champion, victory here this week would make him the first ever person to have sailed on three Melges 24 World Championship winning crews.
A third place in race one and a win in race two has catapulted Zandona and the 'Joe Fly' crew into second place overall, ahead of Bill Hardesty on 'Events Clothing/Atlantis' in third. Hardesty confirmed that it had been another tricky day out on the racecourse but said he was pleased with his team's 2,7, performance today. 'The breeze was up in the morning and died back a little this afternoon. We feel pretty comfortable in the breezier stuff, but the light winds have been a bit of a weakness for us so far. However we think we may have found the extra gear that we have been looking for as we were able to hang on to the Italian boats a lot better in the second race.' Hardesty also believes that the unpredictability of the current out on the Chesapeake is creating an extra challenge for the racers. 'With the amount of rain we have been having here recently, looking at the tide charts is all but useless. With all the rivers draining into this area it's hard to know whether you are sailing in salt water or fresh.'.
Most of the other top ten teams had an up and down day today. Brian Porter on 'Full Throttle' finished with a 5,12, tally and sits in fourth overall. Italy's Carlo Fracassoli on 'Gullisara' dropped from third to fifth after scoring two results outside the top ten. Norwegian Eivind Melleby marred his otherwise single-digit scoreline so far with a twenty-second place in race two, but only dropped one place to lie in sixth. Italian Flavio Favini on Swiss entry 'Blu Moon' had a disappointing day by his own high standards with a 9,21 and has tumbled from second to eighth overall tonight. Also dropping down the order to ninth place after an 11,18 day was US sailor Alan Field on 'WTF'. Jamie Lea at the helm of 'Team Barbarians' seems to have been anchored in tenth place since the regatta started and a 16,8 set of results today sees him remain there going into day three.
In the Corinthian Division things could not be tighter between the top two teams so far with David Dabney on 'Conejo Racing - Ocean Sailing Academy' and Bruce Ayres on 'Monsoon' tied on eleven points apiece. Just two points adrift and poised to pounce is Othmar Mueller von Blumencron on 'Gannet'.
With two more races scheduled for tomorrow and the likelihood that similar conditions to today's will prevail, the fifty-one boat international fleet can look forward to another day of tricky sailing, as this regatta goes into it's third day. Just to throw in an added dimension to the already intriguing mix, the single discard for the twelve race series could come into play if both races are completed tomorrow.

Jetzt wird es ernst: Am ersten Regattatag wurden planmäßig 2 Regatten gesegelt. Der Wind war eher von der leichten Sorte mit max. 10 Knoten - lange Zeit auch deutlich darunter.
Zusätzlich gab es recht starke Strömung, die sich mit dem Kippen der Tide auch fortlaufend änderte - alles in allem keine einfachen Verhältnisse.
Die US-Teams zeigen sich gut vorbereitet und können die favorisierten Italiener in Schach halten - vorläufig wenigstens...
Auf jeden Fall ist es noch zu früh um irgendwelche Spekulationen abzugeben.

Local Knowledge Sees Chris Larson Top The Leader Board On Day One At The Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis Melges 24 World Championship
The Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis 2009 Melges 24 World Championship got underway today with two tricky races sailed in predominantly light airs out on Chesapeake Bay. As well as having to deal with a capricious breeze, which peaked this the morning at around ten knots but dropped to around six knots by the afternoon, the fifty-one-boat fleet also had to factor some complex and not insignificant current flow into their race strategies. With the local conditions playing such a major role in things, it is perhaps no surprise that it was ‘local boy’ Chris Larson at the helm of ‘West Marine Rigging/New England Ropes’ who was able to make most sense of it all. Backed up by tactician Richard Clarke, Larson turned in the most consistent results for the day, with a 5,2, scoreline that sees him top the leaderboard tonight. Despite snagging a crab pot when leading race one, Flavio Favini on the Swiss entry ‘Blu Moon’ still managed to post a third and fifth today and sit in second place, just one point off the lead. After recovering well from a poor start in the first race, Italy’s Carlo Fracassoli on ‘Gullisara’ clawed his way back to ninth place at the finish, before taking a comfortable win in the second. This pair of top ten results were good enough to put him third overall at the end of the first day.
Reigning Melges 24 North American Champion, Terry Hutchinson on Quantum Racing, had what can best be described as a very mixed day on the water; having pulled off a spectacular win in the first race of the day and finishing in thirty-seventh place in the next. Hutchinson was surprisingly philosophical about things this evening when he commented ‘The win in race one was very satisfying as we had great speed and everything felt great. Our thirty-seventh in the next race was no more or less complicated than us allowing ourselves to get completely dorked by two competitors in the middle of the start line. There are actually a lot of positives about that second race performance and we are confident that we will be able to pick ourselves up tomorrow, with our usual attention to detail and focusing in on getting off the start and nailing the first shift.’ Bill Hardesty and tactician Vince Brun aboard ‘Events Clothing/Atlantis’ also struggled for consistency today with a nineteenth in race one followed up by a solid third in race two. Asked about today’s conditions Brun shook his head ruefully and commented ‘Pretty tricky all round. It seemed to us that you had to pick a side, as there was nothing to be gained from working the middle. The spread of the fleet means that if you guess right then you are in the top few, but if you get it wrong you are nowhere.’ Nevertheless after two races the ‘Events Clothing/Atlantis’ team sit securely inside the top ten in seventh place.
The ever improving Alan Field and his USA crew aboard ‘WTF’ sailed two impressively composed races today and their 4,6 scoreline puts them in fourth place and well within striking distance of the podium teams. Top flight European Star helm Eivind Melleby steered Norwegian entry ‘Full Metal Jacket’ into fifth overall with an 8,4 tally for the day. Current Melges 24 US National Champion Brian Porter on ‘Full Throttle’ started the day with a second place before faltering slightly with an eleventh in the second race and now sit in sixth place tonight.
Reigning World and European Champion and regatta favourite Lorenzo Bressani on ‘Uka Uka Racing’ had a terrible start to his title defence, due in no small way to an ankle injury sustained to bow-girl Francesca Prina yesterday, which tragically may see her take no further part in this regatta. ‘Uka Uka Racing’ struggled to an uncharacteristic 26,10 scoreline and sit in fifteenth place at the end of the first day. Bressani was clearly speaking candidly when he told us that ‘The first race was simply a disaster. Everything was bad, my start, our tactics the whole thing just went wrong.’ Perhaps most significant however was the recovery that Bressani pulled off in the second race after another poor start. In a twelve race series it is always risky to bet against the determination of the ‘Uka Uka Racing’ and with every team here likely to put in a high score this week, only time will tell how important their tenth place this afternoon will be come the end of this regatta.

Fleet Assembles On Eve Of The Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis 2009 Melges 24 World Championship

Competitors from across Europe and North America are gathering this evening for the opening ceremony at the Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis 2009 Melges 24 World Championship. The fifty-one boat fleet is made up of entries from the USA, Canada, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France, Britain, the Netherlands, Norway and Ukraine and over the last several days the competitors have been working their way through the Championship registration process as well as getting in some vital on the water practice time. The time for preparation is over now however, as racing in the six-day twelve-race series is scheduled to start tomorrow.
If the results of the Pre-Worlds Regatta give any indication of form, then it was to confirm the potency of the European contingent racing here this week. The reigning World and European Champions from Italy, 'UKA UKA Racing' steered by Lorenzo Bressani, cemented their position as the pundits’ favourite, with victory ahead of Italian America’s Cup helmsman Flavio Favini on the Swiss registered 'Blu Moon'. Third place was taken by another Italian helm, 2006 World Champion Nico Celon on 'Fantastica'. Outside of these three boats, the high quality Euro squad at this event also includes the double European Championship winning 'Joe Fly' crew steered by Italian 470 Olympian Gabrio Zandona as well as Britain's two-time Melges 24 World Ranking helm Jamie Lea on 'Team Barbarians'.
Matching the potential of the visitors are a raft of high profile US helms, each capable of putting together a World Championship winning series here in Annapolis: US sailing legend Terry Hutchinson on 'Quantum Racing' comes into this event as the current Melges 24 North American Champion, a title he won here last year; Brian Porter on 'Full Throttle' is the 2009 US National Champion and has 2002 World Champion Harry Melges calling the shots; Bill Hardesty and Vince Brun have four Melges 24 World Title victories between them and have teamed up aboard 'Event’s Clothing/Atlantis' and Chris Larson the serial one-design champion and local favourite has three-time Finn Olympian Richard Clarke as tactician role aboard 'West Marine Rigging/New England Ropes'.
The Corinthian Division (no professionals allowed) at this regatta has attracted a fourteen-boat entry and looks likely to produce a fierce battle for the Corinthian World Title. Arguably the favourite here is USA helm Bruce Ayres aboard 'Monsoon' who in the Pre-Worlds Regatta has been mixing it at the front of the main fleet and finished one place short of the main fleet podium in fourth. Othmar Mueller von Blumencron (USA) on 'Gannet' is the reigning North American Champion and has clearly set his sights on reclaiming the Corinthian World Crown which he last won in 2007. Henry Filter from the Championship host Eastport Yacht Club, sailing aboard 'Wild Child' but his local knowledge to good use in the Pre-Worlds Regatta to finish as third Corinthian behind Ayres and von Blumencron; a result he will be no doubt be hoping to improve on in the main Championship.
The mouth watering prospect of such a star-studded list of international teams pitting their wits against not only each other but also the unique challenges of the Chesapeake Bay, suggests that the Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis 2009 Melges 24 World Championship is likely to be one of the closest and hardest fought World Championship in the history of the class.

Nico Celon Takes Two Bullets On Day One Of The Pre-Worlds In Annapolis
The opening day of the Pre-Worlds regatta at the Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis 2009 Melges 24 World Championship brought some very mixed conditions with variable wind and a fair bit of rain to test the competitors to the full out on Chesapeake Bay. After two races it's an all Italian top three with Nicola Celon, the 2006 Melges 24 World Champion, leading this warm up series with Lorenzo Bressani sailing Uka Uka Racing second and Flavio Favini aboard Blu Moon third. America's Bill Hardesty sailing Vince Brun's Event's Clothing/Annapolis lies in fourth place just ahead of Bruce Ayres and his Corinthian crew aboard Monsoon. Jetzt geht's los: Während in Europa die Boote langsam aber sicher ins Winterlager gehen bzw. zu den Winterserien in Italien antreten steht in der letzten Oktoberwoche das Highlight der Melges24 Saison 2009 an.
Der Eastport Yacht Club richtet in Zusammenarbeit mit der IMCA die 2009er Weltmeisterschaften in Annapolis aus. Die Meldezahlen sind mit 55 Booten für europäische Verhältnisse eher bescheiden, aber was da an den Start geht hat Klasse. Die europäischen Spitzenteams aus Italien und der Schweiz treffen auf die amerikanische Elite.
Auf Grund des späten Termins - letztes Jahr hat es zu dieser Zeit bereits den ersten Wintereinbruch in Annapolis - und der wirtschaftlichen Lage in den USA ("economy down") fehlt die Masse. Von der Größe und Regattaaktivität der US-Flotte ausgehend wären mehr wie 100 Boote allemal drin gewesen.
Zahlreiche Ex-Olympioniken, Americas- bzw. Volvo-Cup Segler aber auch Vollprofis aus der TP52 und anderen One-Design-Klassen verstärken die Crews. Terry "Hutch" Hutchinson steuert gar selbst eine Melges24 und zählt zu den Favoriten.

Kurz vor der WM haben die Top-Crews doch tatsächlich festgestellt, dass es mittlerweile ein fixes Vorstag auf der Melges24 gibt. Dieses ist für alle Masten, die vor Dezember 2008 gebaut wurden optional - für Masten ab Dezember 2008 jedoch Pflicht. Eine beantragte Aussetzung der Regel wurde mit eindeutiger Mehrheit abgelehnt. Ein klares Bekenntnis der Klasse, die die Umstellung durchaus begrüßt - somit sind nun wohl auch die Segelmacher gezwungen in diese Richtung zu entwickeln. Man wird sehen.....

3. Die Mitglieder der Klasse sprechen sich dafür aus, dass der Mast auch zukünftig in 2 Varianten geriggt wird:
a) loses Vorstag (Fockfall = Vorstag), wie ursprünglich konstruiert
b) fixes Vorstag (mit separatem Fockfall), wie seit 2008 möglich
=> es lag ein Antrag vor, dass die Variante a) per 2011 auslaufen soll!

24. - 27. September, Slovenian Open in Porto Roz
Parallel zum Oktoberfestpreis findet erstmals die Slowenische Meisterschaft statt, hierzu ein paar Infos von Wolfgang Riha (Team "Franz Rocks")
Ein kurzer Bericht zur slowenischen Melges24 Meisterschaft von 25.-27.9., da sich doch immerhin 2 österreichische Teams trotz Terminkollision mit Starnberg nach Süden aufgemacht haben (Team Schönherr/Franz Urlesberger, Franz Rocks/Christoph Skolaut):
Es erwartete uns ein perfektes Regattarevier, Sonne, super Wind, interessante Welle, Segeln in kurzen Hosen, eine gastfreundliche Marina mit nigelnagelneuen günstigen Appartements und jeden Tag Kaffee, Freibier sowie Segleressen. Als Stegnachbarn fungierten RC 44 Stars wie Dean Barker, Paul Cayard und Russel Coutts, die bereits für die darauffolgende Woche trainierten.
Das Feld war mit 13 Startern (SLO, HUN, CRO, AUT) zwar eher bescheiden, die ideale Lage zu Österreich und Süddeutschland (nur 4h von Salzburg), die perfekte Organisation und das tolle Revier sollte aber ein Versprechen für die Zukunft sein.
Am Wasser gabs in 3 Tagen 9 spannende Wettfahrten, Freitag und Samstag zeigten sich die slowenischen Gewässer von der ganz feinen Seite, Wind um die 15 Knoten und Sonnenschein, am Sonntag mussten wir zuerst noch etwas auf Wind warten, schlußendlich konnten aber auch noch bei Leichtwind 2 faire Wettfahrten gesegelt werden.
Peter Podunavac und Crew domierten das Feld mit 7 Siegen Feld ganz klar, dahinter entwickelte sich aber ein spannender Kampf um die Plätze, in dem die ÖsiŽs die Plätze 2 und 4 erringen konnten.
Unisono waren wir schwer begeistert von der Veranstaltung, hoffentlich entwickelt sich die slowenische Klasse weiter so, dass wir öfter mal da unten segeln dürfen!

Oktoberfestpreis 2009 25.-27. September
Am letzten Septemberwochenende findet bereits zum 4ten Mal der Oktoberfestpreis der Melges24 Klasse beim BYC (www.byc.de) in Starnberg statt.
Die Regatta hat sich im M24 Kalender fest etabliert. Per 23.09. haben 20 Crews online gemeldet.
Dazu kommen noch die Postkarten-Melder, so dass wir mit 22-25 Booten rechnen können...

2009 Melges 24 World Championship - Initial Entry Deadline 23 September
Annapolis, Maryland, USA (22 September 2009) - The 2009 Melges 24 World Championship, being held in Annapolis, Maryland, US from 23-31 October is now just over a month away and the initial deadline for entries is tomorrow, Wednesday 23 September. Although late entries will be accepted up until Friday 9 October, those late entries will be subject to a 30% late entry fee so all competitors are urged to visit the EVENT WEB SITE and register online now.
Annapolis is one of the most famous and historic sailing venues in the USA and with the Eastport Yacht Club, the regatta sponsors and the city of Annapolis pulling out all the stops to make this a truly spectacular event competitors can look forward to a week of outstanding racing, camaraderie and fun. The entry list is growing daily and this week's new entries include a team from the Ukraine who join crews from across the USA, Canada, Italy, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Norway, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
Corinthian competitors, who wish to race in the all-amateur division of the competition, are also reminded that they must submit their full crew lists, including each crewmember’s ISAF ID, classification and expiry date (valid until at least 31 October 2009), by Friday 9 October. To be eligible for the Corinthian Division the helmsman of the boat must be an ISAF Classification 1 sailor and the crew members must be ISAF Classification 1 or 2 sailors. Teams that have not submitted their full crew lists with valid details by this date will not be eligible for the Corinthian element of the championship. Corinthian competitors who have already submitted their entries are recommended to check the ONLINE ENTRY LIST to confirm that their crew details are correctly recorded. A representative of the ISAF Sailor Classification Commission will be conducting interviews with Corinthian Competitors during the registration period.
For teams keen to train on the Worlds race area there are several great Annapolis based Melges 24 warm-up events coming up. The 2009 Melges 24 Sail22 Tuning Regatta happens on the weekend of 8-11October, the Eastport Yacht Club Fall One-Design Regatta takes place on 17-18 October with Worlds PRO Jeff Borland officiating and the official Melges 24 Pre-Worlds Regatta takes place from 24-25 October. 2009 Melges 24 World Championship - Initial Entry Deadline 23 September
Annapolis, Maryland, USA (22 September 2009) - The 2009 Melges 24 World Championship, being held in Annapolis, Maryland, US from 23-31 October is now just over a month away and the initial deadline for entries is tomorrow, Wednesday 23 September. Although late entries will be accepted up until Friday 9 October, those late entries will be subject to a 30% late entry fee so all competitors are urged to visit the EVENT WEB SITE and register online now.
Annapolis is one of the most famous and historic sailing venues in the USA and with the Eastport Yacht Club, the regatta sponsors and the city of Annapolis pulling out all the stops to make this a truly spectacular event competitors can look forward to a week of outstanding racing, camaraderie and fun. The entry list is growing daily and this week's new entries include a team from the Ukraine who join crews from across the USA, Canada, Italy, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Norway, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
Corinthian competitors, who wish to race in the all-amateur division of the competition, are also reminded that they must submit their full crew lists, including each crewmember’s ISAF ID, classification and expiry date (valid until at least 31 October 2009), by Friday 9 October. To be eligible for the Corinthian Division the helmsman of the boat must be an ISAF Classification 1 sailor and the crew members must be ISAF Classification 1 or 2 sailors. Teams that have not submitted their full crew lists with valid details by this date will not be eligible for the Corinthian element of the championship. Corinthian competitors who have already submitted their entries are recommended to check the ONLINE ENTRY LIST to confirm that their crew details are correctly recorded. A representative of the ISAF Sailor Classification Commission will be conducting interviews with Corinthian Competitors during the registration period.
For teams keen to train on the Worlds race area there are several great Annapolis based Melges 24 warm-up events coming up. The 2009 Melges 24 Sail22 Tuning Regatta happens on the weekend of 8-11October, the Eastport Yacht Club Fall One-Design Regatta takes place on 17-18 October with Worlds PRO Jeff Borland officiating and the official Melges 24 Pre-Worlds Regatta takes place from 24-25 October. Im Rahmen der Flensburger Herbstwoche können die Melges24 als One Design Klasse um den Titel Int. Deutscher Meister Seesegeln 2009 kämpfen.
Leider lieg der Termin etwas "eingeklemmt" zwischen den Saisonhighlights im August und bevorstehenden Regatten im Süden.
Paralell finden die Norwegischen Meisterschaften statt, so dass auch keine Teilnehmer aus Skandinavien am Start sind.
12 Boote haben gemeldet, 10 sind schlussendlich am Start.
Der FSC unterhält eine gute Webiste, die fortlaufend aktualisert wird.

Melges24 EM 2009 - Abschlussbericht
Nachfolgend die Übersetzung des offiziellen Abschlussberichtes der IMCA:
Hyères, France - 1. September 2009
Alle Teilnehmer der Melges24 Europameisterschaften 2009, die von 24.-28. August vor Hyères ausgesegelt wurden, profitierten von hervorragenden Wind- und Wetterbedingungen die die 10 Rennen durchgängig begleiteten.
Die Temperaturen waren konstant um die 30° C und die Regatten selbst wurden bei 3-5 Bft. Ausgetragen wobei die Windstärke gegen Ende der Woche abnahm und der Wind auch etwas drehender war wie zu Beginn der Woche.
Entgegen dem allgemeinen Trend zu schrumpfenden Teilnehmerzahlen verzeichnet die Melges24-Klasse mit über 90 Meldungen und 86 Booten aus 16 Nationen am Start ein Rekordmeldeergebnis. Sogar ein Team aus Japan vertrat Asien während der Melges24 Euro 2009.
Obwohl die amtierende Weltmeister aus Italien, das Uka-Uka-Racing-Team unter der Führung von Lorenzo Bressani, als Favoriten an den Start gegangen sind, war eine große Zahl potentieller Konkurrenten am Start, inklusive Franco Rossinis „Blu Moon“ aus der Schweiz, dem Europameister 2007, welche von Falvio Favini gesteuert wurde und auf der Sebastian Col die Taktik ansagte. Nicola Celon aus Italien - 2006er Weltmeister - hat sich die österreichischen Olympioniken im 49er (Resch / Delekhart) ins Boot geholt. Das „Joe Fly Team“ vertraute ebenfalls auf Olympioniken und wird von Gabro Zandona gesteuert. Somit alles ernstzunehmende Anwärter auf den 2009er Titel.
Der Kampf in der „Corinthian-Wertung“ für die Amateure sollte nicht weniger spannend verlaufen, als Favoriten galten hier das „Storm Capital team“ aus Norwegen, die im vergangen Jahr die Corinthian-Wertung bei der Weltmeisterschaft vor Porto Cervo gewinnen konnten. Als engste Konkurrenten galten hier der Este Tonu Töniste, ebenfalls schon bei Olympia am Start, der 2007 in Neustadt den Titel des Europameisters ersegeln konnte.
„Uka-Uka“ wurde mit 2 Laufsiegen am ersten Regattatag seiner Favortienrolle sofort gerecht - am zweiten Tag folgte jedoch ein kleiner Rückschlag, als nach einem missratenen Start nur noch ein 13. Platt möglich war - die beiden weiteren Läufe an Tag 2 brachten jedoch eine weiteren Tagessieg sowie einen dritten Platz auf die Ergebnisliste. „Team Alina“ - ebenfalls aus Italien - war mit den Plätzen 4, 3 und 2 jedoch noch besser platziert und führte somit nach 5 Rennen die Zwischenwertung an.
Allerdings hat sich die Alina-Crew im 6. Rennen einen 20 % Strafe wegen Frühstart eingefangen und somit mehr Punkte wie nötig abgeholt. „Uka-Uka“ setzt die Serie mit einem weiteren Laufsieg sowie einem zweiten Platz fort und übernimmt wieder die Führung im Zwischenklassement. Die Crew der „Blu Moon“ lag zu diesem Zeitpunkt hinter der „Alina“ auf Platz 3. Am Donnerstag wieder ein Ausrutscher der „Uka-Uka“ mit den Plätzen 31 und 8 aber keiner der direkten Gegner war in der Lage daraus Kapital zu schlagen und die Uka-Uka geht mit einem Vorsprung von 7 Punkten auf „Alina“ und 12 Punkte auf „Blu Moon“ in den entscheidenden 10. Lauf am Freitag.
Bereits in der Vorstartphase zum 10. Lauf lassen sich „Uka-Uka“ und „Alina“ nicht aus den Augen und in der letzten Minute vor dem Start gelang es der „Blu Moon“ gegenüber der „Alina“ eine sichere Leestellung zu erkämpfen. „Uka-Uka“ startet unbedrängt und kann die eigene Taktik segeln während sich „Alina“ und „Blu Moon“ während der gesmaten ersten Kreuz eng decken. Ein Winddreher vor der Luvtonne bringt dann plötzlich die „Alina“ in Führung und „Uka-Uka“ rundet nur als 13. Boot - der Titel schien verloren.
Aber direkt auf dem ersten Vorwind verliert „Alina“ wertvolle Plätze und „Uka-Uka“ verbessert sich kontinuierlich bis auf den 4 Endplatz - das bedeuted den Gewinn der Europameisterschaft 2009. „Alina“ verliert Platz um Platz und nachdem „Blu Moon“ mit einem 9. Platz in Ziel kommt wird es nochmal kanpp - schlussendlich genügt der „Alina“ ein 19. Platz um den Vizetitel zu sichern, wenn auch nur mit einem Vorsprung von 2 Punkten.
Bei den Cortinthians segelt das „Storm-Capital-Racing-Team“ aus Norwegen relativ unbedrängt auf den ersten Platz. Wie die Overall-Gewinner „Ula-Uka“ hatte dieses Team seinen ersten großen Auftritt anlässlich der EM 2007 und sind die erste Crew die Ihren Titel verteidigen kann. Platz 2 geht an „Aqua-Racing“ ein ganz junges Team aus Schweden, Steuermann ist John Christian Eriksson und Platz 3 belegt die „Men’s Secret Business“ von Rudi Houdek aus Deutschland.
Die Melges24 konzentriert sich nun auf die bevorstehenden Weltmeisterschaften in den USA, welche vor Annapolis/Maryland von 23. - 31. Oktober ausgesegelt werden. „Uka-Uka-Racing“ hofft darauf, dass Sie Ihren Titel verteidigen kann. Aus Europa geht ein schlagkräftiges Kontingent an den Start. Die Amerikaner trainieren intensiv um der europäischen Herausforderung entgegentreten zu können.
Es sieht so aus, als ob ein weiterer Top-Event der Melges24 Klasse bevorsteht.

The Italian Job: O.K. – es ist wie es ist und die Italiener haben erneut eine Meisterschaft der Melges24 Klasse dominiert.
Am Finaltag war laut Ausschreibung nur noch das letzte und somit 10te Rennen zu segeln und somit konnte auch eine Morgenflaute die souveräne Wettfahrtleitung nicht aus der Ruhe bringen. Dann stellte sich jedoch der angekündigte Westwind ein der während des Rennens stetig zunahm und die Serie somit sportlich enden ließ.
Die Titelfavoriten auf der „Uka Uka“ haben Ihre direkte Konkurrenz logischerweise nicht aus den Augen gelassen um nichts zu riskieren – aber selbst im „Defender-Mode“ fährt diese Crew Spitzenplätze. Mit einem 4ten Platz schlossen diese die Serie ab und mit 4 Tagessiegen aus 9 gewerteten Rennen wird die ITA 787 Europameister. Lorenzo Bressani und Frederico Michetti haben ein starkes Team zusammengestellt, welches von Lorenzo Santini auch recht großzügig finanziert wird.
Platz 2 und 3 gehen an die „Alina“ und die „Blu Moon“ – alte Bekannte auf den Siegertreppchen.
Bestes deutschsprachiges Boot wird die „No Woman No Cry“ von Eddy Eich. Kicker Schäfer und seine Crew bestehend aus Eddy Eich, Walter Rothlauf, Katja Frisch und Naomi-Juli Maywald belegen einen hervorragenden 14 Platz – endlich wieder mal ein deutliches Lebenszeichen von einem deutschem Team.
Bei den Coorinthians gewinnt die „Storm Capital“ aus Norwegen, die den 13. Platz belegt – Platz 2 an „Aqua Racing“ aus Schweden und Platz 3 an „Men’s Secret Business“ von Rudolf Houdek – ebenfalls ein tolles Ergebnis.
Das Auskranen geht dann flott über die Bühne innerhalb 3 Stunden sind fast 90 Boote gekrant, geputzt und reisefertig verpackt.
Die gutbesuchte Siegerehrung geht pünktlich um 18:00 Uhr über die Bühne und seit 20:00 Uhr ist die EM 2009 bereits Geschichte.
Eine tolle Segelwoche bei besten Windverhältnissen ist vorüber und eines muss man den Franzosen lassen – Mängel in der Vorbereitung werden mit genialem Improvisationssinn locker ausgeglichen.
Alle Teams freuen sich auf die noch anstehenden Events in diesem Jahr – wie man hört wird eine starke italienische Fraktion zur WM in Annapolis antreten. US-Boys zieht Euch warm an!!

Spannender als gedacht… ...geht es in den entscheidenden 10. Lauf, der am Freitag gesegelt werden soll. Nachdem „Uka Uka“ heute Morgen noch mit 10 Punkten Vorsprung das Leaderboard anführte mußte auch dieses Team heute mal ein paar Punkte abholen. Nach 9 Läufen liegt man zwar noch in Führung aber der Vorsprung ist merklich geschmolzen.
Die “Alina“ segelt heute bei Wind mit max. 10 Knoten 2 x in die Top 10 und ist wieder auf dem 2ten Platz. „Blu Moon“ ist mittlerweile zwar Dritter aber der Punktabstand zum Führungsduo dürft wohl eine Titelverteidigung unmöglich machen.
Es sei denn, dass beide Führenden der rigorosen Startauswertung der Wettfahrtleitung zum Opfer fällt, die richtigerweise bereits beim ersten Versuch unter Z-Flagge starten lässt.
Aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum läßt sich berichten, dass die „Music 55“ von Ruedi Huber, die „Zero Eight“ von Michael Good, die "Mens' Secret Business" von Rudi Houdek sowie die „No Woman No Cry“ von Eddy Eich „bei den Leuten sind“ – der Rest läßt zwar immer mal sein Können aufblitzen, für eine konstant gute Serie reicht es jedoch leider bei keinem.
Aber die Stimmung unter den Team ist gut und kann mit den bisher perfekten Wind- und Wetterbedingungen in Hyères voll mithalten.
Für heute Abend steht die Crewparty auf dem Programm, Gastgeber ist Denis Infante und seine Fa. „Eurovoiles“.
Für den Abschlussbericht bitte ich um etwas Geduld, da morgen noch der 10te Lauf ansteht und dann der übliche Stress mit Auskranen und Abbauen bevorsteht – ach so…. zur Preisverteilung wird auch noch geladen. Die IMCA Seite wird Euch aber auf dem Laufenden halten.

Langsam wird es ernst: Mit dem 6. und 7. Lauf findet die Melges24 EM Ihre Fortsetzung und der Wind spielte wiederum mit. Lediglich die erste Kreuz im 6. Lauf litt ein wenig unter nachlassendem Wind aber bereits auf dem ersten Downwind ging es wieder mit 15 Knoten dahin.
Das Racecommittee war erneut konsequent in der Anwendung der I-Z-Rule und belgte zahlreiche Boote mit einer 20 % Strafe, darunter auch die bis dahin führende „Alina“.
„Boat of the Day“ waren die amitierenden Weltmeister auf Ihrer „Uka Uka“ mit einem 2. und 1. Platz und liegen somit aktuell in Führung. Wirklich beeindruckend, welchen Speed und welches perfekte Boathandling die Crew um Lorenzo Bressani an den Tag legen.
Bei den Corinthians führt das "Aqua Racing Team" aus Schweden. In dieser Wertung liegt Rudi Houdek übrigens auf dem 3. Platz – ein sehr erfreuliches Resultat.
3 Rennen sind noch zu segeln wobei die Windvorhersage eher Leichtwind voraussagen – es kann also noch spannend werden…

The Shows Goes On:
Mit 3 sportlichen Läufen findet die Melges24 EM 2009 am 2. Regattatag Ihre Fortsetzung. Und alles bleibt beim Alten: Sonne, Wind bis 15 Knoten und Welle sowie die Dominanz der italienischen Crews.
Die Wettfahrtleitung nutzt die perfekten Wetterbedingungen und legt lange Startkreuzen in der Hoffnung, die Situation an der Luvtonne etwas zu entzerren – trotz allem geht es knapp ums Fass und knapp bleibt es bis ins Ziel.
Etwas Aufruhr herrscht hinter den Kulissen, da zahlreiche Crews keine gültigen Vermessungspapiere präsentieren können. Die IMCA versucht das Ganze mit der Jury zu regeln.
Für Mittwoch sind 2 weitere Wettfahrten geplant, Startbereitschaft ist 12.00 Uhr.

Auftakt nach Mass: 2 lange Läufe à ca. 90 Minuten mit Starkreuzen > 2 nm waren der Auftakt zum sportlichen Teil der Melges24 EM 2009. Wind und Wetter waren perfekt – d.h. Wind mit bis zu 20 Knoten aus Ost und Temperaturen um die 30 Grad, dazu ein 25 Grad warmes Mittelmeer – Seglerherz was willst du mehr?
Wie erwartet hat die italienische Flotte wieder mal die Standards gesetzt und belegt aktuell die Plätze 1 bis 5!!
Viele Teams durften auch schon einen BFD oder einen ZFP einbuchen – die Wettfahrtleitung beugt Frühstartprovokationen vor und läßt den 2 Versuch unter Z-Flagge, den 3. Versuch unter Black Flag laufen.
Auf dem Blog der IMCA sind wieder einige Videos gepostet auf Picasaweb werden möglichst aktuell Bilder hochgeladen, damit auch die „Daheimgebliebenen“ etwas vom Segelspaß vor Hyeres haben.
Für Dienstag ist Startbereitschaft für 10:00 Uhr angesetzt und die Windvorhersage ist ähnlich optimistisch wie heute – der Spass geht weiter….

Tagesbericht, Sonntag, 23. August 2009
Vormittag lähmende Flaute und eine schweißtreibende Hitze - trotz allem emsiges Treiben auf der Mole. An jedem Boot gibt es noch was zu richten...
Um 12:00 Uhr verläßt das Race Committee den Hafen um den Kurs für das Practice Race auszulegen. Und wie bestellt legt ein netter Ostwind los der im Laufe des Nachmittags noch bis zu 20 Knoten erreicht.
Die ersten Starts auf eine 3-Boot-Linie sind "etwas nervös" und nach 2 Allg. Rückrufen kommt es zum ersten Black-Flag-Start.
Dieser wird kurz vor dem Startsígnal abgebrochen - ein Großteil der Flotte bemerkt das nicht und segelt lustig Richtung Luvfass....
Ca. 1/3 der Flotte folgt den Anweisungen des RC und kommt dann gut von der Linie weg.
Alles ist jedoch nicht allzu aussagekräftig, da viele Boote noch "am probieren sind".
Trotz allem sportliches Segeln und Spass pur.
Für den Abend steht das Skippers-Briefing an - danach folgt die offizielle Eröffnung der Melges24 Europameisterschaft 2009.

Die ersten Starts auf eine 3-Boot-Linie sind "etwas nervös" und nach 2 Allg. Rückrufen kommt es zum ersten Black-Flag-Start.
Dieser wird kurz vor dem Startsígnal abgebrochen - ein Großteil der Flotte bemerkt das nicht und segelt lustig Richtung Luvfass....
Ca. 1/3 der Flotte folgt den Anweisungen des RC und kommt dann gut von der Linie weg.
Alles ist jedoch nicht allzu aussagekräftig, da viele Boote noch "am probieren sind".
Trotz allem sportliches Segeln und Spass pur.
Für den Abend steht das Skippers-Briefing an - danach folgt die offizielle Eröffnung der Melges24 Europameisterschaft 2009.

Am Vormittag noch annähernd Windstille am späten Nachmittag dann satte 20 Knoten Wind.
Die meisten Crews habe mittlerweile eingewassert und sind kräftig am trainieren.
Ein toller Segeltag mit typischen Hyères Verhältnissen.
Am frühen Abend hat auch noch das Technical Committee getagt, im Prinzip gab es nichts Besonderes zu besprechen bzw. zu beraten. Die Abwicklung der Regeländerung zum "fixed forestay" war natürlich ein Thema und als deutsche Fraktion haben wir den Bechluss unserer KV zur "Hiking Rule" vorgebracht.
Ein Mehrheit wird hier sehr unwahrscheinlich, die per Skype zugeschaltete USA ist strikt gegen eine Regeländerung. Auch die Allianz aus Europa brökelt...

COMPETITOR UPDATE NO 2 - 13 JULY 2009
Dear 2009 Melges 24 European Championship Competitors
Welcome to our second competitor update. We're now only a week out from the start of registration so here are a few useful reminders of things you need to think about in the run up to and during registration.
LAUNCHING DEADLINE 1800 HOURS ON SATURDAY 23 AUGUST
Please remember that, as per the Notice of Race, all boats must be launched by 1800 hours on Saturday 23 August. Registration will continue on Sunday 24 August alongside the practice racing but no launching is permitted on Sunday.
Anyone arriving late and requiring special permission to launch after 1800 on Saturday 23 will need to apply in advance to to the Jury and Race Committee for special permission. Please E-mail COYCH@wanadoo.fr if you need to request a late launching or have any questions regarding launching.
CLASS MEMBERSHIP
Please don't forget that the CLASS RULES require the owner of the boat to be a full member and the helm (if they are not the owner) to be an associate member of the Melges 24 class.
We do still have a number of teams who have not yet paid their full and/or associate membership fees so if you are one of these teams please urgently contact your NATIONAL CLASS and pay your fees.
If you are experiencing any difficulties in paying your membership please contact IMCA Administrator Fiona Brown on E-mail fiona.brown@melges24.com.
If you are not certain whether you have paid please check the online membership list at www.melges24.com - if you name is not visible on the list you need to take action.
CORINTHIAN ENTRIES & CLASSIFICATION INTERVIEWS
We are delighted that we have 43 Corinthian teams entered - a record for a Europeans. Check out the CORINTHIAN ENTRY LIST.
Any crew changes to Corinthian teams must now be formally approved by the Jury and Race Committee so if you need to change a crew member you must immediately inform the organisers via E-mail COYCH@wanadoo.fr advising which crew member is no longer available to take part in the regatta and giving the details of the proposed replacement crew member including their ISAF ID, Classification and expiry date (please ensure that you check their classification listing on www.sailing.org to ensure that they classification details are correctly listed before you submit your request.
ISAF Sailor Classification Commission Chairman Antony Matusch will once again be present to conduct Classification interviews during registration. These crew interviews are mandatory and failure to attend will result in disqualification from the Corinthian Division. The initial list of interviewees has now been published at www.melges24.com. Please note that additional names may be added to the list at any time up until the close of registration.
EQUIPMENT INSPECTION AND MEASUREMENT REMINDERS
Our usual equipment inspection and measurement procedures will be in place for this regatta. IMCA International Measurer Jean Louis Conti will be in attendance to oversee proceedings and the Chief Equipment Inspector will be Daniel Belot. They will be supported by a team of volunteer equipment inspectors and registration staff who will help you through the registration and measurement checks as efficiently as possible.
As per the Notice of Race all boats will undergo key equipment inspection checks and in addition approximately 25 boats will be selected for more intensive measurement checks. Upon arrival please check the official notice board to see if your boat is one of those required for the additional checks (remember that additional checks are likely to involve detailed inspections of your rig and foils so do not step your rig or launch until you are certain that the Equipment Inspectors have completed all their checks).
Please also remember that only sails which have already been fully measured can be accepted and that no fundamental sail measurement will be possible during registration.
YOUR EVENT MANAGEMENT TEAM
In addition to those already mentioned above there will be a large team working to ensure that the event meets our usual high standards. Some of the other names to note are:-
Sophie Barrue - COYCH Administrator - many of you will remember Sophie from our last visit to Hyeres in 2006. Sophie has been working on the event throughout and will head up the Registration and Administration Team looking after you.
Regis Berenguier - COYCH Manager - again many of you will remember Regis from the 2006 Worlds in Hyeres. Regis is again in overall charge of the event for COYCH.
Bastien Berenguier - COYCH Press Officer - Bastien also worked with us on the 2006 Worlds as Press Officer and we are very pleased to be working with him again this time around. Bastien is also running the Event Website as well as looking after all the French Media for us.
Pierre Lemaire - Principle Race Officer - Pierre is one of France's top race officers and heads up your Race Committee. His experience includes numerous major championships for a wide range of classes.
Tony O'Gorman - Jury Chairman - Ireland's Tony has been heading up Melges 24 Jurys since our first World Championship in Torquay in 1998 and we are delighted to have him with us again for this event.
Hank Stuart - IMCA Championship Co-ordinator - Hank has been PRO for three Melges 24 Worlds (Ocean Reef 06, Santa Cruz 07 and Porto Cervo 08), the Santa Cruz North Americans in 06 and many other major championships. For this event he will be working with the Race Committee to ensure everything is run as per our regatta regulations. Hank's wife Mary will be traveling with him and will also be joining the Race Committee.
Justin Chisholm - IMCA Press Officer - We're delighted to once again have Justin with us as Event Press Officer and as well as the usual daily reports Justin will also be hard at work blogging from the race course and bringing us lots of post race interviews, etc.
Pierrick Contin - IMCA Photographer - Pierrick has been working with the Melges 24 Class for over a decade now and we are thrilled to have him back with us for the 2009 Europeans. As always he'll be bringing us great photos each day.
David Chivers - IMCA Technical Advisor - David Chivers will be in Hyeres during the registration weekend and will be walking the docks and taking the opportunity to speak with you about technical matters.
Fiona Brown - IMCA Administrator - As always Fi will be in Hyeres throughout the event handling all administrative questions, supporting the media team, taking photos, providing a point of contact for anyone who needs IMCA help and generally being your Go To Person if you have any problems or queries.
